Amazon ‘dash buttons’ to allow instant ordering of household supplies

Pretty much everyone will be able to relate to that sinking feeling when you run out of coffee or loo roll when you need it most. However thanks to Amazon’s new dash buttons, such problems will soon be a thing of the past.

The online retailer has launched a series of buttons which can be placed around the house, that are able to place an instant next day delivery of their associated item with just one click.

The dash buttons are roughly the size of a packet of chewing gum, connect to the Amazon smartphone app and a household Wi-Fi network, charging a credit card and triggering an instant next-day-delivery order when pressed.

The required order size of each item is chosen through the app after purchasing the buttons, and in order to prevent multiple orders, the button is disabled until the order is delivered. And of course if you change your mind, you can always cancel your order using the Amazon app.

The idea is that various dash buttons can be placed around the house in the most convenient locations, such as those for washing powder by the washing machine, or those for coffee next to the kettle.  The buttons also come with brackets or adhesives so they can be hung from places or stuck to services.

Following their successful launch in the USA earlier this year, around 50 companies including Andrex, Gillette and Kleenex will begin selling branded buttons on Amazon’s UK website as of today.

The devices cost £4.99, and come with a discount of the same size on the first order, making them effectively free – however they will only be available to those with Amazon Prime subscriptions, who pay for the service.
