A gap longer than 6 months in your CV will need to be filled. This will do several things to help you not get discriminated based on your job gap. You look more proactive, self-initiative and gives you the opportunity to grow your skills and network. There are many things you can do to fill your employment gap here are a couple of examples. But be honest any is better than saying “I took some time off”.
 

1. Volunteer work

 
Volunteering on your work shows potentials employers that you have initiative and self-motivated. It also shows that you are willing to help others in your own time. There are many ways to find volunteer work.
  • Look up charity in your area and contact them directly
  • Contact your local council or body and see if you can help there, the library or any other services they do
  • See if a local school, hospitals or nursing homes have any help programs you can join.
 

2. Attend events

 
A lot of people think they don’t have time or there is no point in going to events when your unemployed, in fact, it can help. It is a great way to meet and network with new people. Introduce yourself to as many people as possible, you never know who can help you get your foot in the door. If you explain exactly what you want, they may know someone to help or have some advice for you.
 

3. Increase your skills and education

 
If it’s a career change that you’re after, you may need to increase your education and skills. Consider part-time or full time studying. Research what courses are available that will add value to the role you want. Also, if you have any current skills that can do with freshening up or increasing this is a brilliant time to do this.
 

4. online branding

 
With social media being such a big aspect of our lives now, it is the main channel to help with your searches. The more credible your profiles are the more likely Google and potential employers will find you. Make an online presence by creating a website, blog, and an online CV, you could even create a website with all them. Create a professional LinkedIn profile, this is where most potential employers will look first. Don’t forget to link them all together!
