7 ways to receive feedback
It’s never nice to being rejected from the job you wanted. But you to make it seem more worthwhile you should ask for feedback. This allows you to understand where your application needs improvement. It is also a great way to learn what your strengths and weaknesses are. From here you can focus on what you need to improve to maximize your future applications. Here are some great tips on how to receive your feedback.
1. Positive attitude
You don’t want to sound defensive or aggressive when asking for feedback. This can make you seem unprofessional. Taking it personal will not allow you to learn and grow from your rejection. Always be polite, especially to recruiters. They’re more likely to want to help if they feel appreciated.
2. Don’t be angry or sensitive
You don’t want to come across angry or sensitive if you want honest feedback. If an employer feels this from you or you put them on the spot, they’re more likely refuse. If you want to learn from your feedback take it with a pinch of salt.
3. Be quick
It is best to offer thanks straight after you hear of your rejection. This will give you the best opportunity to also ask the question. Ask for feedback about your application, including CV and interviewing techniques.
4. Specifics
If you know what you want to find out it is good to convey this in your question. For example, you may want to find out some of your weaknesses. What set the successful candidate apart from yourself? Or were there any concerns about the application.
5. Know if it’s worth it
Knowing when to ask for feedback is key. If you applied for the job you knew you weren’t quite qualified for it might be best to leave it. If you know where the application lacked, it isn’t right to ask. But, if you know you were qualified and nerves got the best of you, this would be a great time to ask where you can improve.
6. Listen
The main point to get from receiving feedback is, listen. It is a waste of both yours and the employers time if you don’t take on board what feedback they have given you. It gives you the opportunity to improve and not fall at the same hurdle next time.
7. Consider the long run
Your application went well and the only reason you didn’t get the job was that the other candidate was more fitted for the role. Try keeping in contact with the company. Be polite and positive during your feedback. Establish your interest and enthusiasm still with the company. You never know you might get a call for the next position that comes available.
