Global changes from twitter (CCPA)
The changes will come into effect on the 1st of January 2020. They will follow the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
Twitter makes global changed to follow privacy laws. The privacy policy now gives users more information about the use of data by advertisers. It is also launching a site to help clarify in its data protection.
What does this mean?
The law allows users to request their data to be deleted and opt-out of having it sold to third parties. It requires large businesses to be more transparent. Giving users more control over their personal information.
Many platforms including Facebook have recently come under scrutiny on privacy issues. This was because of Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal. Which harvested millions of users data without their consent.
This allows Twitter the flexibility to test different setting controls. Such as opt-in or opt-out privacy preferences. Although, this may be restricted by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Europe’s landmark digital privacy law.
“We want to be able to experiment without immediately running afoul of the GDPR provisions,” Twitter’s data protection officer Damien Kieran told Reuters in a phone interview.
In one of their blogs, it states they have been working to build privacy to new products and upgrade systems. It also states it has upped its communications about data and security related disclosure over the last two years.
The new site ‘Twitter Privacy Centre’ allows users to access and download their data. This was also a way of the company showing users the efforts being made on data protection.
Twitter isn’t the only one who has recently made changed ahead of CCPA coming into effect. Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) said it would honour the law throughout the United States. Google also stated clients will be able to let sites and apps using its advertising tools block personalized ads as part of its efforts to follow CCPA.
