Dyson have launched plans to make their first electric car. The company was built by revolutionising the vacuum cleaner and has now branched out into other home appliances. With their announcement about the new electric car being made in 2017, everyone has been waiting to see the specification of the car.

Electric Car

Sir James Dyson claimed that he has wanted to design an electric car for a long time. In 2017, the government announced that by 2040 they were aiming to phase out sales of petrol and diesel cars, Dyson responded to this announcement that he thought it should be brought forward. Customers have a better idea of the engineering behind the car, as the patent applications have just been released. In 2021, Dyson will be moving their headquarters to Singapore and plan on starting to manufacture the car then. For this new venture, Dyson have got a team of more than 500 people which have been working on the project for two years.

What will the car look like?

The car will be roughly the size of the Audi E-tron, so will be relatively large. It has been designed to have narrow wheels so that less rubber touches the road, so the car more is energy efficient. This allows there to be less rolling distance. The windscreen is much more angled than most other cars and the car has a low roofline, the seats are also in a more reclined position. This is all to improve the aerodynamics of the car.

A new battery option

Dyson have been trying to use a solid state battery as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries. However it is looking likely that the first few runs of cars might be powered by lithium-ion batteries. The battery will be located just below the interior.

What are your thoughts on Dyson branching out and designing an electric car?
