The 5 Best Phone Interview Tips

The Graphic of someone holding a phone: 5 Best Phone Interview Tips

For most candidates, before they even have a face to face interview they either have a phone interview or online interview. If you haven’t had one before, it can seem very daunting but rest assured with these few tips you will be able to prepare for your phone interview.

CV & Job Description

Make sure that you have a copy of the CV that you sent to hand. Also having the job description to hand might be helpful. Then you can draw attention to all of the relevant skills that you have that are required. Maybe even highlight anything you want to talk about in the interview. Also make sure you have a pen and paper to hand. You might have to take notes or write a few questions to raise at the end.

Have questions to ask

The same as with face to face interview, you want to make sure you have questions to ask. Employers can tell if you are truly interested in the company and the role if you have questions to ask. It might be about the future of the company or how your job could develop. The advantage of a phone interview is you can have notes with you, so jot a few questions down before your start.

Prepare

As you would do with a video interview, make sure you have prepared where you will be doing the interview. Make sure there are no distracting noises or something that will interrupt the interview. Turn off your TV, speaker or anything that is on in the background. You want your full attention on the interview, not what it is happening in the room.

Check your phone

This might sound like such an obvious piece of advice but it is so easy to forget. Make sure you phone is charged and you have signal. You don’t want to be waiting for that crucial phone call and not be able to take it.

Be Professional

Although it is easy to roll out of bed and sit your pyjamas whilst doing the interview, try to avoid that. Instead dress professional and get ready as though you are going to a face to face interview. It will put you in the right mind state to be ready for an interview. If you can, sit at a desk and make your surroundings feel as though it is a face to face interview.

Most importantly just ensure you are calm, as a nervous voice will show. Prepare as though it is a face to face interview and it will feel more natural.
