It can be difficult to know what to look for when you are trying to fill an executive role and it can be difficult to know what skills you should try to showcase as the candidate. Here’s some qualities that the perfect executive candidate should have:

Communication

In an executive level job it is crucial to be able to lead a team and work with other leaders to progress the company. As a candidate, throughout the recruitment process it is important to highlight your great communication skills. Make sure the employer can see your potential. As the employer it is important to be looking for strong communication skills to see if the candidate will fit in with your team.

Learns from mistakes

This is relevant to all candidates. But especially for executive candidates it is important to learn from previous mistakes to ensure it is done better next time. It is likely that as an executive you are a bit of a risk taker. So prove you understand your previous mistakes and that you learnt from it.

Risk taking

Following on about risk taking, it is good to point out that it’s great to be bold and want to be daring to move your company forward. But it is also important to know when the risk is worth taking. An employer will want to see you have had the confidence to make strong decisions. But also won’t want to see you making endless mistakes at high costs, so finding that balance is key.

Growth

As a leader you are trying to inspire and engage your team around you to follow the company’s vision. Candidates should show they are able to motivate a team and help them to grow, not just focus on yourself. When hiring for an executive, see if the candidate will be able to work well with the current team to help them grow and develop.

It is important for both the candidate and the employer to understand the key skills that need to be demonstrated. So when recruiting or trying to get a new job, really think about the specific role.
